Lab facilities
An appropriate Biomedical Engineering Laboratory is central to the success of the proposed program. We strongly believe that the real learning is achieved by practice. Therefore this complex constitutes a platform where students work closely with the real equipments as well as patients and researchers (physicians and engineers). It consists of 2 components:
1) Clinical Equipment Laboratory.
2) Investigative Medical Devices Laboratory.
Clinical Equipment Laboratory
This laboratory will be equipped with the state of the art medical equipment that will be used for diagnostic examinations of patients and similar equipment but older that will be used to teach students. The former will be maintained and run by medical staff including physicians and technical specialists. The latter can be dismantled, reassembled and investigated at will by students under the supervision of teaching staff. As such, this laboratory is a teaching hospital like and can be used to teach engineering as well as medical students. The goal of this laboratory is to:
- Give the undergraduate students an opportunity to learn how these equipments work and how to install, run and service them. In addition, they will be able to learn to deal with patients and real data
- Give the graduate students an opportunity to use these equipments as research tools for doing advanced research, for example to develop the ways to send the obtained data to other medical centers using the internet system
- Create a new way of teaching medical students which is more technical and instrumentation oriented. As such, it will constitute the heart of a new concept medical school that can be established in another step.
- Give healthcare services to local population and students. Students are young, healthy and smart, working with this group will help develop the notion of preventive medicine, self care and smart medical handling
- Establish an appropriate environment for students to design new medical devices which are less expensive, portable and more convenient for the Vietnamese environment and conditions, especially for the remote area
- Design new medical equipments and develop new investigative methods
- Attract international researchers to come for scientific and medical investigations
- Attract investors including medical equipment manufacturers who may see this as an appropriate combination between a non-profit education and a for profit investment.
In general the laboratory will be equipped with medical imaging pieces of equipment. In the first phase, the laboratory will be equipped with equipments that are popular in the hospitals (such as ultrasound, X-Ray, ECG, EEG machines) and equipments used in on-going research projects (such as Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)). In the second phase, the laboratory will be equipped with the more advanced and rare equipments in the Vietnamese hospitals (such as CT scan, MRI).
The reason for this approach is the popular equipments are less expensive and learning those equipments will give students more chance to get jobs when they graduate and we also can address the urgent needs of the society. We plan that, if this experience is successful, we will be able to attract more funding including investment from outside people to the laboratory and help us to move quickly into the second phase.
Investigative Medical Devices Laboratory
This is a multipurpose laboratory which allows us to carry research projects in the fields of human behaviors, sensors and regenerative medicine. We will conduct research with healthy human subjects, animals and tissues. It will serve as the hub for students and faculty by providing common laboratory space and equipment for undergraduate and graduate students to use on biomedical engineering projects, as well as for joint projects with medical, dental medicine and other schools, and industry. The laboratory will be a state-of-the-art facility for teaching and research, containing standard measurement instruments, materials and supplies for performing routine experiments. Also, it will be equipped with special instruments for specific projects such as the investigations of influences of electrical, magnetic fields and microwave on stem cells. It will have out-patients medical devices that students can dismantle for reverse engineering studies. We will coordinate the equipments and supplies of this laboratory to avoid the duplication with our partners including the laboratories of the Electrical Engineering Department, Computer Science Department and the Biotechnology Department of International University and Stem Cell Research of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. As such our laboratory will be equipped with mainly optical components. We will reserve a section for research design projects that will be used by students to test the feasibility of novel concepts or initiatives, and to build prototypes.
Why Us?
The vision of the Biomedical Engineering Department is to promote integrative research, education and entrepreneurship at the forefront of biomedical science and engineering. We will jealously maintain the following characteristics of our activities: high quality, sustainability and usefulness...
