Biomedical engineering is an emerging multidisciplinary field that involves the application of state-of-the-art technology to the creation of methodologies and devices for human welfare and for a better understanding of human biological processes. It includes the study of medical instrumentation, bioinformatics, biomechanics, regenerative medicine, and biotechnology, and it requires expertise in applied and basic sciences as well as engineering.

Pursuing an emerging field is crucial for Vietnam. Indeed, the international community is way ahead and advancing rapidly in long-established traditional engineering such as Civil, Electrical, Chemical and Mechanical Engineering. A developing country like Vietnam would need to invest a lot of effort, time and resources merely to catch up time lost. The hope to become a world leader in these fields may thus be realized only after several generations. By contrast, putting resources into an evolving and emerging technology such as BME will allow Vietnamese researchers to contribute to its current progress as well as to establish their own unique attributes. Also, the success in the BME field constitutes an example that will increase receptivity for reform and advancement in other fields in Vietnam as well as in the neighboring countries. International University is a young and dynamic university. Enjoying a special status of autonomy, it aims toward pioneering in emerging technology, and in advanced teaching and research approaches. It also aims toward attracting top notch international researchers and Vietnamese scientific diaspora by offering them an adequate working environment. This Department is one of the vital components to spearhead that ambitious goal.

Biomedical Engineering (BME) Department is a newly created department at IU in March 2009. Its Chairman is Professor Vo Van Toi, Emeritus Professor at Tufts University, USA and a former Executive Director of the Vietnam Education Foundation (VEF). The BME Department offers a 4 year undergraduate educational program and is developing its graduate programs. The Department will accept its first cohort of undergraduate students in September 2009.

The activities of BME at IU include Medical Instrumentation and Regenerative Medicine. The former refers to the design and applications of medical devices. The latter covers a wide range of activities such as the use of stem cells, genes and other biological materials to repair or replace damaged tissues and organs. The Department activities put emphasis on the balance between research, education and entrepreneurship.
